Beta Ecdysterone is a naturally occurring phytochemical found in such herbs as cyanotis vaga. It is a type of ecosteroid, and is present in many plants and insects. Beta Ecdysterone was first discovered in insects acting as an invertebrate polyhydroxylated sterolic growth hormone. In insects it acts as a moulting hormone and controls many biological processes, including progression between larval stages, entry to pupariation and metamorphosis. 1
So just what can Beta Ecdysterone do for humans? Well, early Russian research showed that ecdysterone has inherent anabolic activity and could increase protein synthesis in animals. Exactly how Beta Ecdysterone increases anabolic activity still needs to be examined.
One study done by Russian scientists suggested that Beta Ecdysterone possesses a wide spectrum of anabolic action on the contractile proteins of the skeletal muscles and also exerts a pronounced influence on physical endurance of animals when training. 2 Another group of Russian researchers looked at the combined effects of ecdysterone and a high protein diet. They found that when athletes combined a high protein diet with Ecdysterone, lean muscle mass increased by 6-7% and body-fat decreased by 10%. 3
What does all of this mean to you? Well based on the results from the studies mentioned above, you could also expect to see faster gains in muscle size, with greater recovery between workouts. Several Russian scientists testing Beta Ecdysterone also reported that subjects experienced less fatigue, more motivation, and improved strength.
